Sudanese supermodel Alek Wek, who was chosen as the official face of Cape Town Fashion Week (17-22 August, 2004), has been called a disappointment for Africa. She was expected to arrive in Cape Town two days later then her originally set arrival date after having it re-scheduled due to illness. Yet despite such an extension, Wek did not show up at all crucial shows, press interviews and cover shoots. As a result of the model’s failure to fulfill her obligations, the organizers intend to annul her contract.
“She missed three flights, no reason was given and she's not taking calls. But fashion week is bigger than Alek Wek," Gavin Rajah, convener of Cape Town Fashion, told South African Mercury.
The ultimate purpose of Wek’s involvement in the show was to present to international guests fashion design talents of South Africa at such a highly anticipated premier fashion event. As informs The Mercury, each of the 43 designers participating in the show created unique garments especially for Alek to wear throughout the fashion week.
As a UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund) ambassador the model was also expected to make a charity appearance at Nazareth House.
"She epitomized African success and seemed to be the ideal role model for South Africans. We are disappointed by Wek's behavior and lack of concern for promoting South African fashion and, in turn, the upliftment of the continent ", said Rajah.
