Supermodel Alek Wek is faced with a great misfortune at London Fashion Week this time - her second handbag collection that was to be presented, failed to arrive. The collection was flown over from New York by Virgin Airways on September 12 and vanished, reports Vogue. "We have no idea where it went," says fashion expert Lainey Sheridan-Young, who was planning to display Wek's latest designs in her Cheyne Walk showroom this week. "Virgin said it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack and Alek is devastated. People keep asking whether the collection was insured, but that isn't the point. A sample collection is unique. It's priceless."
In 2002, inspired by traveling the world, and applying personal artistic ideas from her paintings mixed with African heritage, the Sudanese model launched her own colorful handbag line for travel and everyday use. The name of the line, Wek 1933, stands for her father’s birth year. The debut collection, durable and practical, yet fashionable and original, sold out in no time at high-end stores like Barney’s and Maxfield.
