Anna Nicole Smith called off her recently planned trip to Newfoundland to join People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) due to the conflicts between sealers and protesters.
PETA spokesman Michael McGraw said that they adviced the model to call off her visit because of the recent clashes with the sealers that led to fire shots. "We felt it just wasn't safe to put her in that position. Working with activists who are protesting on the ice floe last week and again this week, they found that the seal hunters became physically violent and actually attacked many of the protesters on the ice." (The Associated Press Friday).
Instead Smith decided to make a statement on www.furisdead.com: "The sealing industry says that it is killing more seals because of an increase in demand for fur — all fur," said Smith. "Anyone who buys a mink or fox fur coat or a jacket trimmed in fur bears responsibility for creating an environment of demand for the furs of these baby seals."
Canadian government claims that sealing hunt is dictated by economical necessity as it brings $16.5 million to coastal regions.
Anna Nicole Smith also appeared in PETA's anti-fur ad campaign, taking the pose of Marilyn Monroe with the tag line, "Gentlemen prefer fur-free blondes."
