It was a big night yesterday for Texans as the Texas State Society threw the big Black Tie & Boots Ball in Washington to honor President Bush on the eve of his second inauguration.
The Texas-style gala that drew 12,000 guests to the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel was the most unconventional event of inaugural week, at least in terms of fashion. Despite its formal nature, the guests were expected to pair their couture outfits with cowboy boots, Stetson hats, belt buckles, bolo ties, and anything that would give the costume a Texas flavor, reports The Washington Times.
First lady Laura Bush wore a rose silk taffeta Carolina Herrera ensemble with a Western touch — a full skirt and bodice resembling a button-down shirt. The twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, donned black and white and seafoam green, respectively.
Red, white and blue was the main wardrobe theme seen in many mens cummerbunds, in bow ties and in even in gowns.
Sue Brannon, the chairperson of the Midland County Republican Party in Texas, appeared in a red floor-length frock, red snakeskin boots, a rhinestone tiara, a matching brooch that spelled Bush and the Texas flag on a necklace.
The Texas entertainment included Lyle Lovett, Julia Roberts ex-husband, the Western swing of Asleep at the Wheel, classical pianist Van Cliburn, gospel singer Yolanda Adams and country singer Gary P. Nunn.
