Donatella Versace and her daughter Allegra were both wearing Swarovski crystals. Joely Richardson and Naomi Watts both wore Dior: Richardson in black, embroidered with scarlet silk roses and Watts in pale, eau de Nil flounces.

The great list of famous names included Linda Evangelista in a cobalt blue slink by Tomas Maier at Bottega Veneta; Sophie Dahl wearing vintage Alaia, which was clinging like rubber; Jacquetta Wheeler in Dior; Karen Elson in Yves Saint Laurent; and Karolina Kurkova in Viktor & Rolf's extraordinary "duvet" crinoline, embroidered with the words "I Love You", which became entangled in the Met's doors.
