Fred Sathal, the Designer Who Dressed Notre-Damme de Paris

Fred Sathal, the star of French Art Fashion, was born on April, 24th in Marseille.

She started her designer career in 1988 when she met Genevieve Sevin Doering, the famous French costumier. Then, Fred began learning sewing and cutting basics, having resided in huge unused apartments in the Paquet Building, "Port Autonome de Marseille," together with Hartmut Bosbach, sculptor, who helped her greatly in her studies and, by the end of 1993, she had already developed a personal dyeing technique.

In 1993 she moved to Paris to create exclusive collections for a private clientele and often appeared in mass media – that time she designed original garments for the singer Bjork, "Signal d'Amour", that was later bought by Fashion Museum of Marseilles.

In 1994, Fred showed off her collections «A ma zone urbaine» and "Etoile de vie filante" at the Trianon and, in 1995, Fashion Museum of Marseilles presented a photographic exhibitions of her collections for last four years, the same year the presentation of her latest collections, "Nomades Land" and "Metamorphose Articulee", took place at the Trianon in Paris. Then, the Corrousel du Louvre opened doors to show off her Vie Artificielle and Contre Nature in 1996.

Fred has twice been rewarded in the A.N.D.A.M contest (Association National pour le developpement des Arts de la Mode- National Association for the Development of Fashion Arts) and she also received the Venus of "Futur Grand" (Most Promising Talent) for her collection, named "Metamorphoses."

In 1996, in New York, Fred presented her new collection "Vie Artificielle", than followed its presentation to the C.V.D.C Show Room. Her next collection, "SFS", sponsored by the French Contemporary Art Fund, was totally composed of tee-shirts and was shown off at the the Fair "Who's next". Pieces from that collection were available for sale in Parisian museum chain stores.

Next year her collections "Appel d'air" was presented at the Academie d'Architechture and Instincts Genetiques - at the Galerie Paradis. In 1998, Fred chose the Montparnasse Tower as the best place to exhibit her Aura minerale.

Fred loves to design costumes for the stage: she designed and produced garments for the Ice Queen and, together with Enki Bilal, costumes for Romeo et Juliette, the ballet of Angelin Preljocaj. And, of course, no one can forget her terrific costumes for the unfading French musical "Notre-Dame de Paris", that brought her international fame.

The designer developed her own unique style, creating bright and 'gypsy' outfits, and shiny sequins on dresses became her trademark.

This winter, Fred Sathal presented her collections in Tokyo. The garments expressed the freedom and originality of decor to discover the magic of "Vertige Botanique" - Botanical Intoxication. The designer shared: "I decided to show off all [collections]. My way of designing doesn't remind the usual one – I don't have a house, I don't have boutiques, I don't have personnel, I do almost everything myself, and finally it is not a problem anymore to show off my creations on defile."
