It’s no secret that awards shows - whether it’s the GRAMMYS or the Oscars – are as much about what the celebrity nominees and wannabes are wearing as they are about who walks away with the most – and the fewest -trophies.
If that were not the case, Joan and Melissa Rivers would most assuredly have little or no careers at all.
Last week’s GRAMMMY Awards event was no exception: as the music industry’s hottest artists poured out of their limos and sauntered down the red carpet (which, in this case, was green, thanks to sponsor Heineken), they found their way straight to the waiting microphones of Joan Rivers who eagerly posed the all-important question: “Who are you wearing tonight?”
The answers run the gamut: Armani, Versace, Vera Wang and yes, even the Gap.
From Alicia Keys’ white pedal pushers topped by a peach-tinted wrap with a long, flowing train (conceived by Keys, designed by Roberto Cavalli) to Sting’s kilt to Evanescence’s Amy Lee’s self-designed top and skirt that made her look like a mummy coming undone. And then there were the costume changes: Beyonce’s hot pink mini dress which she sported during her rousing duet with the artist formerly known as Prince and a long golden gown designed by none other than Beyonce’s mom, Tina Knowles. And Cristina Aguilera’s complete metamorphosis from the frilly, girly dress she wore to the event and the totally contrasting man’s suit that she put on for her breathtaking performance of her song, “Beautiful.”
But the award for the most fashion forward celeb of the evening goes to actor Billy Bob Thornton who donned dark sunglasses, a sideways-turned cap and a t-shirt that clearly proclaimed ‘Fashion Stinks.”
