Zippo Manufacturing Co. purchased an Italian leather goods and fashion accessories company DDM Italia that produces goods under the Zippo name. DDM makes handbags, belts and wallets. Both companies are privately held and financial terms of the deal Monday weren't disclosed.
Zippo and DDM Italia have battled in court over the use of name Zippo because DDM began marketing goods in Italy under the name at a time when the lighter was gaining popularity in Europe. Zippo hadn't registered the name under clothing and leather categories, said George Duke, Zippo's chairman.
Duke said both sides spent a fair amount of money in court, but that the purchase gives Zippo "a wonderful product line." The Italian company will become Zippo Fashion Italia, SRL, and each company will operate as separate Zippo brands.
One fundamental similarity between those companies is that both are family-owned businesses with quality products and strong brand awareness” said Greg Booth, president and CEO of Zippo Manufacturing Company.”This is a strategic venture aimed at protecting the integrity of each brand and strengthening our presence within Europe and other international markets.”
