Sudan-born supermodel Alex Wek has signed up to be the face of the Cape Town Fashion Week, that kicks off in August. Gavin Rajah, a coordinator for the event, said the reason they tapped Wek is because she is a role model and a success story for the African continent. Discovered by a scout at a street fair in London, she has modeled for giants like Gucci, Fendi, Calvin Klein, Victoria’s Secret, YSL, Valentino and Michael Kors, and was on People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" and "50 Most Influential Faces in Fashion" lists.
The 27-year old beauty will be opening the South African Designer collections set to showcase during the event.
"I definitely want to model for the younger African designers to help get them off their feet and kickstart their careers, she told New York Sunday Times.
"I'm looking forward to seeing their work, creativity and how they express themselves."
Wek is currently working on her own line of designer handbags, WEK1933, named after her dad, who was born in 1933 in Sudan, and hopes to have her designs displayed during the show.
