The controversial waxwork nativity scene portraying David Beckham and his wife, ex-Spice Girl Victoria as Joseph and Virgin Mary, criticized by Church leaders as disrespectful, has become subject to vandalism. Yesterday (December 12th) the male visitor at Madame Tussauds knocked over the statues of the Beckhams damaging their heads and ran away.
A spokeswoman for Madame Tussauds, Diane Moore admitted that the exhibition had received 70 complaints about the tableau, adding that "the vast majority of people have taken it in the spirit in which it is intended - a bit of festive fun."
"We are assessing the damage now, we don’t know if it is going to be repairable in a day or if it will take longer."
The tableau also featuring Kylie Minogue as an angel, Hugh Grant and Graham Norton as shepherds, and Tony Blair, President Bush and Prince Philip as the three wise men, has drawn large crowds of visitors. According to BBC News, the celebrities included in the tableau were voted into the roles by 300 people who visited the attraction in October.
The exhibit is currently closed as police investigate security footage.
