Lets face it: no matter how they try, the Beckhams relationship with Church is far from perfect.
David and Victoria, whose portrayal as Joseph and Virgin Mary in a controversial waxwork nativity scene outraged church leaders earlier this month, have once again become subjects of sharp criticism - this time because of the truly grand christening ceremony they threw for their sons Brooklyn and Romeo.
Aspiring fashion designer and former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham and her Real Madrid star husband had a chapel built for their sons’ christening on the grounds of their Hertfordshire mansion in England. The couple hosted a star-studded christening ceremony last Thursday, attended by the likes of Elton John, Tom Cruise and Liz Hurley. However the Irish Examiner reports that the ceremony has been slammed by the church leaders as sham.
“The chapel is just a building. It would require a bishop to consecrate it and they have not done that, ” The Irish Examiner quotes local Canon Robert Sibson as saying.
Meanwhile, the Church of Ireland Bishop of Cork, who married David and Victoria and who reportedly baptized the Beckham boys, denied that he conducted the ceremony.
“It would appear to be a classic case of adding two and two and making five,” said the clergymen who claims to have been visiting members of his own diocese, during the day he allegedly baptized the young Beckhams.
“This sort of thing is a product of the prurient obsession that many in the media and in society at large have with celebrity families such as David and Victoria Beckham and their children.
“The simple fact of the matter is that I did not officiate at this occasion.”
