An unlikely fashion icon Camilla Parker Bowles has inspired the British supermarket chain Asda which is owned by Wal-Mart, to produce a $36 copy of Parker Bowles ring, a royal family heirloom that Prince Charles gave her for their engagement. The estimated value of an original platinum ring is $900,000.
In a low-price version, the diamond is replaced with cubic zirconia, and the platinum with a less-impressive and far less expensive sterling silver.
We wanted to give our customers a taste of royalty for a fraction of the price,” a company spokeswoman told WWD.com. “We think it will sell very well.”
The chain is producing the limited edition of 1,000 rings, which will arrive in Asda stores a few days before the announced royal wedding date. Asda is also making a more costly replica of the ring, a platinum version with a three-carat diamond, priced $57,000.
Meantime, designers are already brimming with creative ideas for Camilla Parker Bowles’ wedding outfit. Monique Lhuillier thinks lace top and organza skirt, while Oleg Cassini suggests to "throw convention to the wind".
