Dog Fashion. A toy poodle imagines herself as a fashion model at the second annual New York Pet Fashion Week. There are some Animals Modeling Agencies in the world – have you ever thought?
Sporting the latest in Fido fashions, 30 cute canines — ranging from show dogs to shelter rescues — strutted their stuff on the runway at the Metropolitan Pavilion at the second annual New York Pet Fashion Week, as 13 designers from around the world got one dog to show off their newest threads. Each tail-wagger then got escorted down the catwalk by a human model, Nydadailynews.com reports.
The fashion hounds reveled in the attention they received. Sushi, a 3-year-old basset hound-Shar-Pei mix, wasn’t shy although this was her first time modeling. A scar above her brow from extensive eye surgery didn’t mar her photogenic looks.
"She has very poor eyesight now, but she loves the attention and people don’t even notice the scar," explained the female owner from N.J. "We got into modeling because everyone who saw her said, ‘You have to let her model!’ "
"We make sure they have nice personalities, that they get along with other dogs and that they won’t pull down a human model from the stage," said the show’s dog coordinator, Nicole Mann, 20, from All Tame Animals modeling agency.
Working with doggie divas isn’t difficult, said Sarah Hawks, named International Groomer of the Year, who was busy primping pooches backstage.
"You just have to go with the flow, keep the dogs happy, and everything will be fine," said Hawks, 56, of Newark, Del.
But no matter how hard you prepare them for their closeups, the furry models sometimes revert to their canine instincts. "Last year, one dog pooped on stage in the middle of the show, and we just had to keep going," Hawks said. "As they say, the show must go on."
For discriminating pets, it really was the cat's pyjamas: the event offered everything a pampered pooch could ever want, from jewel-encrusted leashes to doggy perfume, Sydney Morning Herald writes.
Among the canine clients in attendance on Sunday was Chai, a short-haired white American Bulldog with blue eyes, dressed in a pink and bronze satin cape made especially for the weekend event.
"We closed our pet shop in Baltimore for three days to come here. The dress was made for her, for the event,'' explained Thomas Berger, Chai's owner.
Nearby, a male model strutting in just his underpants lead a honey-colored Greyhound dressed in a camouflage outfit up the catwalk.
The show lasted a good hour, featuring dogs modelling designs from 20 or so pet fashion houses to a pounding disco soundtrack. Although it was mostly dogs on show, a black cat in a golden collar did make an appearance on the runway towards the end, carried by a young girl.
