Bravos new series about competing fashion designers, Project Runway, kick off tomorrow night. Heidi Klum, hosting the reality TV show, prefers to call it a documentary.
What makes Project Runway popular is not so much the big name of the host as the contestants themselves. The show brought participants from around the country to New York for a series of fashion challenges. Every week, all the amateur clothing designers must create a specific fashion in a limited amount of time using only the materials allowed, reports the New York Post. The worst design and its creator get eliminated. One of the challenges will be to create a glamorous evening outfit, having only $50 at their disposal for supplies and fabric which must be bought in the supermarket.
Were going to show the public what its like to be a designer. I think people will be interested to see what its really like, how talented designers are. What were looking for is who is talented, not who is the funniest, not who is good-looking, Klum told The Associated Press.
Viewers of the TV show will get to see the pre-taped episodes of the eliminating process. Three finalists will appear in a live runway contests in February during New York Fashion Week.
You could see very, very quickly who wasnt going to be up to the challenges but then it got very difficult because (the remaining contestants) were equally good, said Klum, who also serves as the shows executive producer.
The final thing comes down to talent. The winners have to be good, they have to represent themselves well and they have to be able to work with others.
According to Bravos Web site, the winning designer will receive $100,000 in seed money to help him/her launch his/her own fashion line and a mentorship from the Banana Republic Design Team.
