Pop diva Jennifer Lopez made her runway debut as a fashion designer at the hotly anticipated finale of New York Fashion week on Friday. Along with cashmere sweaters, flowered babydoll tops, denim shorts, and diamond-studded jeans, the Latina singer and actress unveiled a lavish fur collection. The fur-inspired designs included a full ivory mink coat trimmed with fox on the collar and cuffs,fox-trimmed hoods and fur strapped evening dresses.
"Jennifer is a great lover of fur," said Charlie Ross, US director of marketing for Saga, which made Lopez's Sweetface label.
"Sweetface is a luxury label and Jennifer wanted her furs.
"She told me her favorite piece is a bleached silver fox coat with strips of the fox stitched on to a chiffon back."
While the first part of the show, featuring casual items like jeans, belly-baring tops, and zippered sweatshirts, didn’t impress the audience much, Lopez offered more glamorous looks later in the show.
"I was very pleasantly surprised," Jane Larkworthy, an editor at W magazine, said of Lopez's new "Sweetface" line. "I love satin pants and I love fur."
"It's a step up from her teen-age, pop line. It's definitely more mature, and it's more of a replica of what Jennifer does," Metanoya Webb, an assistant editor at InStyle magazine told Reuters.
But while the sexy star received approvals from international fashionistas, she has immediately limited the list of potential distributors of her sumptuous collection, as famous department stores like Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and Harrods declined the range due to their no-fur policies.
Lopez told WWD that her Sweetface collection is more exclusive and expensive than the first JLo line of clothing and fragrances which was launched in 2001. Last fall the pop diva also presented her JLO by Jennifer Lopez lingerie line.
