Miss Colombia Jeymmy Paola Vargas Gomez won the Miss International Beauty title in Beijing, on October 16. Miss USA Amy Holbrook was announced the first runner-up, and Miss Greece Olga Kypriotou was awarded the second runner-up prize.

Beauties from 58 countries competed in the global final of the 44th International Beauty Pageant, known as the “Beauty Olympics”. It is the first time the contest has been held outside Japan and the U.S. and the second time the communist superpower has hosted a major beauty contest.

Since it was established in California in 1961, the pageant has been trying to distinguish itself from the Miss World contest by proclaiming it has a serious purpose. The theme of this year’s event was peace and friendship between China and Japan, reported The Scotsman.
