Mary-Kate Olsen has become a new fashion icon for young women and girls. The teen self-made multimillionaire who moved last year from LA to New York to become a student in New York University, is now making a sensation with her look.
The freshman shocked the community by sporting outlandish clothes. Mary-Kate together with her twin sister Ashley Olsen were likely to become the front-runners for Earl Blackwell’s worst-dressed list. But the girls actually made up their own style wearing all those dust-catcher skirts and street-sweeping cable-knit cardigans, trousers and floppy hats.
The style of Mary-Kate may be described as grungy and a little bit dotty, and the girl actually looks like a "homeless" copycat. But still the unusual look found its fans and followers among the young people.
The New York Times quoted NY and Los Angeles’ stylist Karen Berenson as saying: "The Olsens are the real thing. (Mary-Kate) makes skinny girls in baggy clothes look cool."
The stylist added that only a month ago "stylish young women used to wear Gucci or Prada head to toe. Today they are more apt to be seen at supermarkets or parties toting a beat-up Chloé bag, their eyes shaded by enormous, high-priced Laura Biaggiotti sunglasses, the faint suggestion of opulence hidden beneath chadorlike layers of cashmere and ankle-length peasant skirts.”
The style and make-up of the young actress at first received lots of disapproval from critics and fans, but her Bobo (bohemian and bourgeois) style finally found its acceptance.
