Animal rights activist group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has singled out nine companies for special recognition in its second annual Proggy Awards for animal-friendly achievement in 21st century culture and commerce.
Proggy (meaning progress) is presented to companies that provide alternatives to processes that hurt animals and educate consumers about animal rights. The award goes to those who helped consumers discover, access, and explore vegan food, animal-friendly fashions, and cruelty-free beauty and household products, helped raise awareness about the needs, nature, and behaviors of animals, promoted respect and empathy for animals through books, music, and movies, reads the statement on PETAs website.
And the winners are: New Balance, for Best Cruelty-Free Athletic Shoes constructed from synthetic leather and breathable mesh, Matt&Nat, for Best Cruelty-Free Purses and Wallets, Stella McCartneys Spring 2005 Collection as the Best Animal-Friendly Luxury Fashion, Avon as Best Cruelty-Free Cosmetics, La-Z-Boy collection by Todd Oldham who uses no animal skins in his designs as Best Animal-Friendly Furniture, and Abercrombie & Fitch for Courage in Commerce As the first company to pledge not to use wool from Australian sheep in any of its garments until both mulesing and live exports are stopped.
