Yohji Yamamoto Dreams to Design Time

Yohji Yamamoto Dreams to Design Time

Yokohama-born fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto is to show the creative process to the public. Starting this week in Paris from April 13th, the Juste des Vetements (Just Clothes)exhibition will continue till August 28th at the Musee de la Monde.

Yohji Yamamoto is recreating his Tokyo workshop, revealing his mind by showing off about 100 his outfits hanging within reach, so that the Japanese designer’s fans can get close enough to touch them.

"We wanted to surprise the public and show them all the steps from the material to the final design," British Vogue cited the spokesperson of Yohji, Nathalie Ours.

"If I could make a collection to show the passing of time I would be very happy," the designer said. "Because old clothes are always newly designed. Designing time is my dream."

Yohji Yamamoto studied fashion in Tokyo (Bunka College, 1968) after he studied Law. During the study time he started making clothes for his mother and her friends. In 1968, he earned a scholarship to study in Paris and started designing clothing in 1970. He launched his company in 1974 and showed his first collection in Tokyo.

He debuted in Paris in 1981 and in New York in 1982. In 1986 he won the Mainichi Fashion Grand Prize. The work of Yamamoto evoked both praise and criticizm. But the designer was creating clothes for Japanese women and thought of their comfort, which became the main constituent of his unique style.

For now Yamamoto is the only Japanese fashion designer to have been awarded the French Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres.

Yamamoto, famous for his avant-garde silhouettes and expert pattern-cutting, has also developed the Y-3 sportswear clothing line with the German company Adidas. The line hit the runway last month in Paris .
